Importance of English

English is one of the Teutonic languages. It is transplanted in the Indian soil with the emergence of British rule in India. The credit of introducing it as medium of instruction goes to Lord Macaulay. It spread more rapidly than British rule in India. The legacy of this language has left an indelible imprint on the Indian psyche. It played an important role in our struggle for freedom. All great leaders of our freedom struggle were the product of this system of education. They created awareness among the people of India through their speeches and writings.It enjoyed a privileged position in the past and after independence its position is no way less as compared to other languages. English is not our mother tongue. We learn it with a specific purpose. On the dawn of independence Hindi was declared as the official language but it was decided that English would continue as a link language for ten years. Govt. continued extending this period till date and it seems that it will continue in times to come. English is no longer the language of the colonial masters. Sometimes it appears as if it were one of our own languages. In this age of globalisation we need the knowledge of English for communication to interact with the outside world. English plays an important role in the domains of education, business, administration, political relations, judiciary, science, technology, I T etc. and is therefore passport to social mobility, higher education and better job opportunities. Today English is a global language and is rightly called the window of the world. .
