Drug addiction is a social crime. Stressful situation most often has driven people to become drug addicts. In the modern world none is unaffected by stress. We can say that hundred per cent people are suffering from stressful situation from this malady. Stressful situation is caused by problems in one“s life. In that stressful condition life throws frustration in their way. Everyone has to face the brunt of adversities. When one fails to cope with the expectations, he either tries to end his life or experiments with drugs. He wants to seek escape from the rigours of life.The initial intake of drug is elusive. It gives him momentary escape and mental relaxation. He forgets that the problems drowned in drugs come back.The effects of some drugs are greater and more injurious. The addict develops a desire to indulge in them more often. Drug abuse is a psychiatric and social problem. The addict becomes physically and mentally dependent on drugs. He requires more and more drugs to transport him to the world of fantasies. A strong desire to take drugs develops. If he does not take it, he suffers from painful and uncontrollable convulsions, vomiting and other maladies. It is a very painful situation that this evil is nourished more and more in the university campuses and college premises. Even school grounds are not left undefiled. Some take drugs just to seek company.Some take it to break boredom. It is mostly introduced to one by his friends. There are other factors that lead to drug addiction. Some of them may be broken homes, hatred for any authority, lack of parental care or lack of moral and value education. Drugs are classified into narcotics, hallucinogens, stimulants and sedatives. Sedatives or tranquillisers make somebody go to sleep or make him feel calm or relaxed. Stimulants like concaine produce feeling of excitement. Hallucinogens can alter a person“s thoughts and feelings. Narcotics like heroin and cocaine affect the mind in a harmful way. Physicians prescribe drug to cure diseases. They sometime enhance physical and mental capacities. But when the patient becomes drug addicts, it becomes a threat to his life and existence. Drug abusers run the risk of contracting many diseases besides getting alienated from the family and society. Our country is facing the problem of trafficking in drugs. It is an open secret the trade is flourishing because it is patronized by the bureaucrates and politicians . The major portion of drugs is smuggled from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Govt. has enforced stringent laws to curve this menace.Drug offences are non-bailable. But no law can be enforced without the active support of the society and the people. We have to help the government to eradicate it. Children have to be provided healthy environment at home and in schools. Drug abusers should be counselled regularly. Intoxication is a mental disease. It is only the will power that can overcome it. Madia, society and NGOs can play effective role to rehabilitate the ones who are misled. The society should also feel its responsibility towards these victims.
