Sports and games are an integral part of education. They play a major role in the holistic development of the personality of students. Without these activities, schools and colleges are reduced to teaching shops, teachers become information mongers, students become bookworms and education narrows down to mere cramming. Games help the students not only to keep physically fit, but also make them responsive, alert and disciplined students.Games are organised at state, national and international level. Olympic games are a mega event held every years at international level. Pierre-de-Coubertin the father of modern Olympics gave a slogan to play the game and play it well. This slogan contains the spirit of sportsmanship.Games prepare the students to meet the challenges of life. Duke of Wellington was the Commander-in-Chief of the British army. He is best remembered for his defeat of Napoleon in the decisive battle of Waterloo in 1815.When he was asked how he could manage that victory, his answer was simple, “The battle of Waterloo was won on the playfields of Eton.“ He studied in Eton and graduated from there. The discipline, coordination, qualities of leadership, and strategies that he learnt in the playfields of Eton made him victorious. Games help students discover their talent. They make them feel more determined and confident. Students get chance to meet different people They learn more about things outside their own environment. Games give them encouragement to face the challenges of life. They lay the foundation of good and successful life. Students also develop will power. They become more active, patient and disciplined. Games encourage the students tovplay for team rather than for personal attainment. It is rightly said that books develop our mind but games develop our body. Team work teaches the students to Cooperate with one another. They learn good manners and obedience. They learn time management. Games teach the students how to enjoy victory. They also teach them how to take defeat in a cheerful manner. Playing games is the best use of leisure time. It is a training ground to promote patriotism and national integration.
