A teacher is the pivot of any educational system. He renders guidance to the learner and arranges the learning situations for him. The whole structure of education depends upon his training, educational qualifications, devotion and efficiency. To think of the professional development of teachers should be given the top priority. By professional development we mean developing skills and abilities of a teacher. Literally profession means a type of job that needs special training. Grow means to increase in number, size, strength or quality.Thus growth is the process of growing physically, mentally and spiritually. Love of profession is the basic ingredient in a teacher. If he loves his profession, he must love his students. A teacher should be a knowledgeable person, a well informed one. He must have a zest for learning. A teacher is always a student. Unless a teacher has drunk deeply at the fountain of knowledge, he is not in a position to inspire in others the love of learning.Attitude is another important attribute of his behaviour.Our behaviour speaks out of our attitude. When our attitude is positive, we get attracted towards an object, person or an idea. We avoid it when we are hostile to it.Let us develop positive attitude towards this professon and justify our love for this profession. A teacher“s life is the custodian of culture. He must lead a value based life. Values are desirable behaviour held in high esteem in a particular society in which a person lives.A teacher should be a man of vision Vision is the foresight. It is the ability to think or plan with great imagination and intelligence. It needs creativity and adventure. He must have progressive outlook. He must be able to put new ideas into practice.No amount 0f pressure should wean him from the path of duty and justice. He should reach a height that should be a matter of both envy and inspiration for his contemporariers. Pre- service and inservice orientation is a must for his professional growth. He must have an experimental attitude. Knowledge of educational psychology is a must for his professional growth.
