The relation between Students and politics has assumed significance in the present time. It is a vexed question of the day. Before Independence Gandhi ji gave a call for non-cooperation movement in which Students actively participated .At that time Students were motivated with a sense of patriotism. After Independence ours is a country wedded to the ideals of democracy. Democracy imposes many responsibilities on the citizens of a nation.Students participation in politics in the post Independence period has given us many pleasant and unpleasant experiences. The basic purpose of politics is concerned with promoting the general welfare of the people and it is only through education that we can inculcate the importance of good governance. Viewed in this perspective political consciousness is very important. It is instrumental in the healthy democratic development of a country like India. Hence students can“t remain from politics .They must study the governments, political systems and ideologies. They must know and practise the process of making collective decisions and exercising power in a society. Students resorts to strike or participate in welfare movements to achieve their goals. But we must understand the sanctity of purpose behind such calls. If such calls harm the unity and integrity of a nation Students should have nothing to do with agitation. Such agitation either in favour of the measures of the government or against the government would harm their career. Students won“t find time to devote themselves to study. They may become irresponsible or harmful members of society. The unreasoning excitement will adversely affect them intellectually and morally. All such nefarious activities endanger the peace and prosperity of their families. Students should have nothing to do with such agitations when there are bad motives against the opposing party .However the desirability of preparing students for prospective responsibilities of this great nation can“t be underestimated. Only time will tell, how far do we succeed in this endeavour of ours .Let us hope for the best.
