Himachal Pradesh is a land of mountains, rivers and valleys. It is locatedvin the north-west of India.The western Himalayas are the perennial source of all the five rivers that flow through it. The snow capped peaks of Himalayas, the lakes, hot springs, valleys, glaciers and passes make this serene land a centre of attraction for tourists and travellers. H, P, with an area of 55673 sq. km comprises of 1.7 per cent of the total land area of India.The entire territory is hilly and mountainous. It is popularly known as Dev Bhoomi. It was constituted on April 15,1948 comprising of 30 hill states at that time. Consequent upon reorganisation of states,some hilly areas of Punjab were merged into it on Nov.1,1966.It attained its statehood on Jan. 25, 1971 and became the 18th state of the Indian union. It has 12 districts with state headquarters at Shimla. Shimla, a hub of tourists and visitors has a long history. It became the summer capital of the Govt of India in 1864 A D when Lord Lawrance came to the town along with the members of Supreme Council andvall the public offices. People of this hilly state are known for their simplicity, honesty and sincerity. It is the home of apple orchards, mushroom and ginger. The biggest fruit processing plant in Asia is in Solan. Maximum people from the young generation are either in the defence services or in para military forces. They have created name and fame in the army. There has been legendary heroes in the past. During British India L/Nk Lala Ram from Parol(Hamirpur )and Bhandari Ram from Bilaspur got the highest military award Victoria Cross for their unprecedent act of bravery. After independence Major Som Nath Sharma from Kangra became the first PVC winner, the highest military award with acts of supreme and selfless bravery andv sacrifice. Thereafter Himachal added to its credit more PVCs given to Vikram Batra(1999),Rifleman Sanjay Kumar(1999),and Lt Col Dhan Singh Thapa. Himachal is a land of fairs and festivals, gods and goddesses.Lavi fair of Rampur, Minjar mela at Chamba, Shivratri at Mandi, Dussehra of Kullu, Holi at Sujanpur and many more fairs and festivals present the hilly life style, traditions and rich culture of the people. There is great scope of tourism in Himachal. Beautiful valleys present a panormic look It is a peaceful state and tourists feel safe and secure. It is a pollution free state with lush green ambience and dense forests. It is an emerging industry for fresh entrepreneurs. Govt should promote this industry and develop infrastructure so that more tourists pour in and state“s economy and employment get a push.
