Education is the foundation of a nation on which the superstructure of a nation stands.Nelson Madella has rightly said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.“ A nation is built by her citizens and education builds the citizens who run the nation. We most often blame Lord Macaulay for his system of education that he introduced in India in the first half of the 19th century. But we must know that all our great leaders who successfully pioneered the freedom struggle were the product of this system. They created awareness among the people through their speeches and writings. No system of education can be called a perfect one. There remains the scope of its reform to meet the changing needs of time. In the present set up science and technology dominates the scene. The introduction of mobile and internet has greatly affected our mode of living and mode of thinking. It has made great impact on old techniques of teaching and facilitated the delivery of the content in a better and effective manner. But technology can“t replace a teacher. We must know that knowledge is created by man and not by machine. We can apply these technologies in the field of education for instant delivery of information more precisely. During the last 25 years the use of ICT has fundamentally changed the working of education. Now we have better facilities to ensure a continuous enhancement in the over all quality of teaching and learning. We need well awakened and wakeful citizens for good governance and better administration of our country. It can bevensured only by good education.But the question is whether we are heading towards the right direction to ensure quality education For that we need quality teachers. In the present scenario education has become a commodoty selling like hot cakes either in the private sector or in the public sector. It is confined only to books devoid of values. Public sector is politicised and private sector is commercialised to a great extent.In the private sector there is great exploitation of teachers. A trained graduate or a postgraduate is getting salary much less than that of the peon in the public sector.There is no device to check the malpractices of this mismanagement. The teachers have become a frustrated lot and obviously a frustrated teacher will give away frustration to create a new class of raw citizens. In the public sector frequent transfer of teachers, lack of facilities, lack of infrastructure, shortage of staff and many more other factors have adversely damaged the system of education. There are so many private academies selling dreams to the students and fleecing the parents by charging huge amount of fees. Students are studying in these academies but are enrolled somewhere else. Dummy admission is another way to make money. The state of affairs has damaged the real purpose of education. It will remain as such so long as admission is made on marks or merit. When we prepare students for examination and not for life, we deviate from the real path.We are making round pegs for square holes. This is sheer wastage of national resources and much more of human resource. Education is the worst sufferer in free India The new education policy of 2020 has given a ray of hope in this dark niche of this mud house. Let us hope for the best. If we want our nation to go ahead, we will have to save it from the tight hold of the money makers whose priority is money, not the education or service. If we want to save the nation we have to save education first.
