A teacher plays the role of a nation builder. A nation becomes great not by its material exuberance but by the men of character. Value education meets the requirement of society by creating men of character and integrity. The cultural soil of India is enriched by the eternal values we rely upon. Education is essentially a social affair. It is the transmission of knowledge, skills, experiences, attitudes and the cultural heritage from one generation to another.Education is not worth the name if it does not help an individual to live harmoniously and cooperatively in the society. It is the teacher who is the role model of educational arena. He is the amalgam of literary, civic, moral, cultural, emotional and social welfare activities.So we can say that future of our country depends on such teachers as are capable of inculcating human values through value education. Education is concerned with the growth and development of an individual and of the nation. It gives a new shape to the individual and to the nation. The system of education in any country is decided and determined by the state through its governance. Prior to independence the system of education was aimed at feeding the interests of the ruling class. But after independence our society witnessed a social transformation which is unprecedented in the history of education in India. A lot of changes and development has taken place.But development is not everything in itself. The most important thing to my mind is what type of society we would like to create and on what moral/ethical principles or human values would that proceed. Two factors, science and its application in technology and democracy, a political system which is considered to be the best system of governance in the present scenario. The teacher has a pivotal role to play in moulding the character of the students through value education. We find a very fine example of Abrahim Lincoln when he wrote a poetic letter to his son“s teacher requesting him to teach his son the values of life. Lincoln knew the importance of teacher in building the character of his son through value based education. Let us be very sincere in our thoughts, words and deeds and help humanity and society to grow through value education. The teacher“s role in this field is indispensable.
